Renting A Confirmed Reservation: How Long Does It Take?

December 30, 2024
By

Whether you find yourself unable to travel or you are looking for a way to help offset the annual dues for your DVC membership, renting out a DVC reservation that you have already booked can be a great way to make sure those points get used and you earn some cash for them!

If you’ve never rented out a confirmed reservation before, you may be wondering: how long does it take?  As an example, here’s a look at how long the process took for a confirmed reservation I recently rented out through the DVC Rental Store.

November 30: Submitted My Reservation

The first step was to log into my account in the DVC Rental Store Member Center.  From the homepage, I went to the More tab and selected Rent Out Your Booked Reservation.  This is where I filled out a short form asking for the basic basic reservation information, such as the check-in and check-out dates, resort, room type, room size, number of points, reservation number, and the lowest price per point I was willing to take.  I also had to upload a screenshot to show my reservation confirmation.  It took less than 10 minutes to complete all the information, including filling out a W9.

November 30: Reservation Posted Online

Later that same afternoon, I received an email stating that my reservation had been priced and was live on the DVC Rental Store website.  Then it was time for the waiting game as I waited for someone to place a deposit on the reservation before I’d move on to the next steps.

December 9: Reservation Sold

A little over a week after my reservation was posted, I received an email notifying me that the reservation had been sold!  The time it takes for a reservation to sell can vary, depending on factors such as the dates, room type, and pricing.  I happened to be selling a confirmed reservation for a Boardwalk View Deluxe Studio at the BoardWalk Villas during the start of the 2025 EPCOT International Flower & Garden Festival.  I’m pretty sure that renting a room with fireworks views and close to proximity to the festival helped the reservation sell quickly.

December 9: Reservation Transferred

My next step was to transfer the resort reservation to the new guest.  You can do that by either calling Member Services or contacting them via Chat on the DVC website.  I chose to use the Chat feature, which only took me a few minutes.  The DVC Rental Store made it very easy to provide the necessary information to Member Services.  It was all in an email, ready to copy and paste, which ensured the information I shared was accurate and thorough.

Once Member Services transferred the reservation to the guest, I shared the confirmed information with the DVC Rental Store to show that the transaction was complete.

Lastly, I signed the point use rental agreement, which detailed the terms of the rental, payment schedule, and guest directives and compliance.  For more on the terms, you can see a sample agreement here

December 9: Received the Upfront Payment

With the DVC Rental Store, Members receive 75% of the total rental income upfront.  The remaining 25% is received when the guest checks in to the resort.  Since I opted to receive payment through PayPal, the upfront payment was made a few hours after I completed the reservation transfer and rental agreement.  I’ll receive the remaining 25% in March when the guest checks in to the BoardWalk.

From start to finish, it took me 9 days to rent out the confirmed reservation and transfer it over to the guest.  The DVC Rental Store made it quick and easy for me to rent out my DVC points!  There was very minimal work needed by me as the Member.  Plus, I felt much safer renting out my points through the DVC Rental Store instead of renting the reservation myself, thanks to the rental agreement and the DVC Rental Store’s full payment guarantee, even if the renter cancels.

If you do not have any reservations already booked that you can rent out, don’t forget that the DVC Rental Store offers two other ways to rent out your points: You can claim an open listing for a reservation that someone has already requested, or you can simply list your points to rent out and the DVC Rental Store will notify you when your points match a reservation request.
