An Ode to the Disney Resort Murphy Bed
I stayed at Disney’s Vero Beach Resort just a few weeks ago for the first time in a long time, and I fell in love. Yes, I love the resort; its laid-back attitude and gracious warmth woo guests from the first moment spent in the coastal color-clad lobby. But, I’m not talking about falling in love with the resort.
Listen, I love the stretch of beach that the resort is situated on. It’s gorgeous and calm and quiet and clean, but that’s not what’s caused my recent love-filled emotions. And perhaps someday I’ll write an article dedicated to Disney’s Vero Beach’s incredible whoopie pies, but now is not the time to discuss baked goods. Friends, I’m in love with a piece of furniture: the Murphy bed.
Murphy beds came to Vero Beach Resort during last fall’s refurbishment. The room before my new favorite piece of furniture cam to town was lovely. It was a great space, and featured two queen sized beds. It was what you’d expect from a Disney resort room. But what the room is now is even better, and, one might say, completely unexpected.
The addition of the Murphy bed, which meant the elimination of one of the regular queen sized beds, allowed the center of the room to be completely opened up. I could dance a jig in the middle of the room if I wanted to (and if I knew how to dance a jig). A family of four could stay in the space quite comfortably with sandy toes, wet bathing suits and all, and still have the space for the kids to play a board game on the floor or spread out their favorite toys. Parties of all sizes and makeups will have the gift of a bit of extra breathing room, and on vacation, that’s what literally every guest wants.
Even though my recent visit to Disney’s Vero Beach Resort was comprised of only my husband and myself, the added space was greatly appreciated. I pulled the Murphy bed down one evening and spread out and wrote an article. It was fun to sit on, and the artwork featuring Dory and the turtles of the East Australian Current on the headboard made the bed even more special.
One note: it’s not as comfortable as the regular queen bed. It’s fun and different, but it’s firm. Very firm. Kids will love it; adults might not. But really and truly, that’s the only downside of the Murphy bed in my book.
I’m happy to say that guests can also find the lovable, space-saving Murphy bed at resorts around Walt Disney World. From the European elegance of Riviera Resort to the practical dining table-turned bed found at the All-Star resorts, Murphy beds play a pivotal role in making the most of your resort room’s footprint. With the All-Star rooms ringing in at only 206 square feet, every inch saved is a wonderful thing.
It’s so funny what an impact one piece of furniture can make, but here I am singing the praises of a bed that folds down from the wall. Bless it.
Dear Murphy bed, I’m grateful for you.
