Tips for Renting Out DVC Points

Renting out your DVC points can be a great way to make your unused points work for you.  Whether renting can help you pay your annual DVC dues or give you a little cash to take a cruise or vacation at a non-Disney destination through the Point Swap Program, here are a few tips for DVC members who are interested in renting out their points.

Put Points Up for Rent Sooner Rather Than Later

Acting early helps the DVC member in a couple of ways.  First, the earlier that points are put up for rent, the better availability will be when you go to book a room for the guest.

Second, if you are able to rent out your points within the 7- to 11-month home resort booking window, you can receive a bigger payout.  Depending on your home resort, you can earn up to $20 per point for 7- to 11-month bookings.  For example, rentals at the Grand Californian and Disneyland Hotel can go for up to $20 per point.

See Which Method of Renting Works Best for You

Did you know that the DVC Rental Store has three ways to rent out your points?  You can list your points, and the system will let you know when there is a matching rental request.  You can also do the reverse and claim an open listing, which is a guest’s rental request.  Lastly, you can rent a confirmed reservation, which is a DVC reservation that you have already booked.

Not sure which method is best for you?  Talk to the DVC Rental Store’s Member Relations Team at membermanagement@dvcrentalstore.com, and they can help guide you.

Check Your Email Regularly

When you are in the process of renting out your points, be sure to check your email regularly for any instructions from the DVC Rental Store.  For instance, if you are renting out a confirmed reservation, you’ll have 72 hours to change the DVC reservation over to the guest once you receive the guest’s information from the DVC Rental Store.

Consider the Point Swap Program

The Disney Wish

If you are using your rental income for a cruise, a trip to Universal Studios, or beach vacation, consider taking advantage of the DVC Rental Store’s Point Swap Program.  Not only will you get a great value for your points and a seamless experience with the help of your Swap Specialist, but there is a tax benefit.  While income from a standalone rental is taxable, income from a swap goes right to your vacation.  It is considered an even trade, and no 1099 is issued.
