Disney Vacation Club: Renting Points vs. Buying a Contract

February 6, 2025
By

If you often rent DVC points, you may have considered getting a contract of your own, but is it better to rent points or buy your own?  Below are a couple of scenarios where it may be beneficial to rent points and a couple where it may be better to buy a contract

Better to Rent Points

Trying Out DVC

If you are interested in DVC but unsure if it’s right for you or still deciding which home resort is best for you, there’s nothing better than renting points for a taste of the DVC experience!  If you are still in the process of saving up for a DVC contract, renting can also be a good alternative.

When renting, you don’t have to pay annual dues. Over the lifetime of a contract, the dues will add up to be more than the initial buy-in price, so they are a significant factor when thinking of the financial implications of purchasing a DVC contract.

Riviera Resort

Frequently Traveling to Non-Disney Destinations

Although DVC members can bank and borrow their points in order to use them a year earlier or a year later, all unused points do eventually expire.  To get the most out of a DVC contract, you want to use every last point.  This means you would need to book a Disney vacation at least every other year to prevent points from expiring before you can use them.  If your family prioritizes other vacation destinations, renting points is likely a better fit.

Better to Buy a Contract

Staying at a Disney Deluxe Resort at Least Once Every Other Year

While you can get great room rates by renting points, if you plan to stay at Disney Deluxe Resorts regularly, the amount that you spend on renting points could instead go towards purchasing your own contract.  Over time, having your own contract will be more economical than renting.  Plus, owning a contract gives you greater flexibility since you have the ability to make and modify your reservations yourself as a DVC Member.

Beach Club Villas

If you have a strong preference for staying at one of the more popular resorts like the Beach Club Villas or the Grand Californian, you may be better off purchasing a contract.  Resorts in high demand tend to book up quickly, some as early as the 11-month mark when booking opens for home resorts.  This means that it may be harder to rent points for these resorts.  Owning a contract allows you to secure a reservation as early as possible.

The DVC Rental Store is the best place to rent DVC points, especially with its Stress-Free Cancellation Policy and exceptional customer service!  If you would like to purchase a DVC contract of your own, contact our friends at DVC Resale Market, the largest reseller of DVC contracts.
