When Should DVC Members Rent DVC Points for Their Own Stays?
Although DVC Members have their own points to book vacations year after year, from time to time it makes sense for DVC Members to rent points for their stays. Here are just a few scenarios where it may benefit DVC Members to rent points.
When You’re Out of Points
The most obvious case for renting points is when you are a DVC Member who is all out of points. With nothing left from the next Use Year to borrow, a rental can be a good way to get more points. Renting is cheaper than cash stays booked directly through Disney.
In addition, renting points at $21/point during a DVC Rental Store promotion is even a better deal than purchasing one-time-use points from Member Services at $22.50/point. Unlike using one-time-use points, renting doesn’t limit you to getting just 24 points per Use Year, which can only get you about a one-night stay. You can book an entire weeklong stay (or longer if you want) by renting points.
When You Want to Book a Resort with Low Availability
Even when you have enough points available, some DVC Resorts are just very difficult to book. Those include smaller or more popular resorts with limited availability, such as the Beach Club, Grand Californian, or even some of the coastal resorts like Hilton Head and Vero Beach during the summertime. If you’re trying to book at a non-home resort, renting points from an owner who has the 11-month booking window where you’d like to stay can help increase your odds of getting the stay that you want.
When You Want to Book a Restricted Resort
If you purchased a resale contract after January 2019, these points are restricted. Points for the original 14 DVC Resorts (those that opened before Riviera) can only be used to book stays at the original 14 Resorts but not the newer resorts like Riviera, the Villas at Disneyland Hotel, and the Cabins at Disney’s Fort Wilderness. Resale points from newer resorts, including Riviera, the Villas at Disneyland Hotel, and the Cabins at Disney’s Fort Wilderness, can only be used to book stays at their home resort.
Renting points can be a good workaround to book a stay at a resort that you can’t normally book with your resale points without paying the steep prices that come with cash stays through the Disney website.
